Will of Brown, John, 1638 


In the name of God Amen I John Browne of Colebrooke in this the p[ar]ish of Horton in the Countie of 

Buck blacksmith sick of bodie but of p[er]fect memorie thanke be given to Gods therefore doe make

and ordiane this my last will & testament in manner and forme following And first I commend 

my soule into the hands of Almightie God my maker ha[p]pen I got by him through the death 

and passion of his onlie sonne hime my saviour Jesus Christ to hone forgiveness for all my sinns

my bodie I committ to the earth from whence it came to be buried as decentlie as hereaeth a may

of my degree and calling And as touching such worldlie goods as God of his mercie has undewill 

me whall I give devise and bequeath them in a manner following And first I give devise and

bequeath unto my sister Ann Masone the cottage wherein I now smith and doe inhabite to have

and hold to her and her assigns according to the true intent and meaning of my late deceased

father Anthone Brown for and during the term of her natural lief she the said Ann ke[e]ping

the same the and metand time in good and sufficient repair. Item I give and bequeath to my

good friends Mr John Mugett Mr David Salter Mr Thomas Pitt & Mr Edmund Slocombe fower

of the Burgesses of the town of Colebrook in the Countie of Bucks and heirs heires the tenement

or cottage wherein I now live and doe inhabite w[i]th the appurtenances And all the reterson? &

remainder of the said cottage (formerlie bequeathed to my said sister Ann for term of her lief) 

upon trust and confidence that they shall make sale of the same to anie p[er]son of p[er]sons whatsoever and

with the money taken and received for the same shall first paid all my debts and funeral expenses

And shall also paid unto Jane my wife the some of tenn pounds of lawful English money And

then my will is that with the residue of the money w[it]ch shall remain after my debts and funeral 

expences shall tac ??? and my weif paid as aforesaid the said John Mudgett Davis Salter Thomas 

Pitt and Edmund Slocomb shall put and place out my four daughters Marie Browne Elizabeth Brown

Susan Brown & Martha Browne w[it]h such p[er]sons and they shall think  [???] to be decent and brought

up according to heir good discrec[ti]ons. And if they shall be and money left when my said children

shall be placed out in manner aforesaid my will is that they put the same out for he best

nicre also that in are be reisell thereby and that the same w[it]h such interest and hath be made

equallie devided between them as they shall attend & come do their said all ages of sixteen years

And for such goods as I have I will also that they be sould for and towards the putting out of

my said children and raising a stock for them in manner aforesaid (if it will rise do again) by my said

good friends John Mugett Edmund Slocombe informe I doe hereby make executors of this my last will & testament

In witness whereof I  the said Jogn Browne have hereunto set my hand and seale the two and

twentieth daie of November 1638 in the fourteenth year of the reign of our soveigne lord 

Charles by the grace of God King of England Scotland France and Ireland defender of the

faith
